The University of Michigan football program has been under scrutiny since sign stealing allegations were brought to light. This sign stealing allegation, brought to attention of the NCAA October 25th, has cause an outbreak of hatred towards the university. Jim Harbaugh denied any knowledge of this, which caused immediate investigations through both the NCAA and the Big Ten Conference.

This entire scandal can be pin pointed to one man: Connor Stalions. Stalions was a low-level analyst for the football program and decided to take his love for the university to another level. He decided to use videography at opposing players games to help steal signs from the sidelines. He would “hire” numerous people to attend these games and complete this task for him to analyze and use against the future opponents.

So, where are we now with this scandal? The NCAA is close to concluding their investigation which concluded that Stalions did in fact do this which is against NCAA rules. But they are leaning towards the fact that Harbaugh had to connection or knowledge to what was going on. The connection between the NCAA and conferences is quite confusing. The NCAA is not taking action towards Harbaugh or the University. Instead, this lies in the hands of Tony Petitti who is the Big Ten Commissioner. Not only is he the Commissioner, but it is his first year on the job.

A big decision it is for Petitti in his first year on the job. Connor Stalions recently has resigned from his role within the university as he did violate rules. Numerous Presidents and Athletic Directors of opposing Big Ten universities are calling for harsh punishment towards Michigan. Harbaugh game suspensions as well as team forfeits have been in the talks of potential punishment for the program. But, giving out a punishment to Michigan is definitely a difficult task as the NCAA has already completed the investigation with no punishment. Michigan has been fighting these allegations and punishment as they continue to fight towards an end to this scandal.

With the NCAA investigation coming to an end, new allegations have been made from Michigan towards numerous programs in the Big Ten working together to take Michigan signals. Overall, it seems the new commissioner is in for a wild ride in his first year. The future for Michigan is unknown as well as other Big Ten programs, but these allegations are becoming one of the biggest scandals in college football history as the investigations continue to add high emotions towards the ending of this 2023 college football season.
